What is a Jewelry Shopping Service?

copyright by Rena Klingenberg

I first stumbled onto the "jewelry shopping service" approach to marketing my handcrafted jewelry a few years ago.

I couldn't believe I'd never heard anyone talk about this before - because it's a wide-open field with TONS of opportunities to sell your jewelry. It's the main way I sell my jewelry now. Personal shopping services are a growing trend in all kinds of market niches.

Typically a personal shopper helps clients determine what they should buy, locates the best deal on an intended purchase, or finds the perfect gifts for customers to give.  Personal shoppers tend to specialize in a particular area of expertise, where they know a certain market and its suppliers inside and out.

Above all, personal shopping is a service business, and as people get busier and shopping options get more overwhelming, there's an increasing demand for specialized personal shopping service businesses of various types.

What if you operated your handcrafted jewelry business like a personal shopping service?

There are absolutely immense opportunities for jewelry artists to sell their work this way, as you'll see in "Secrets of a Handcrafted Jewelry Shopping Service".

A jewelry shopping service could easily be your entire jewelry business, or just one income stream of it.

It's a very flexible way to sell your jewelry, and I've found that it's very easy to fit it in around all the other things going on in your life.

Why It's Such a Profitable Way to Sell Your Jewelry

By operating as a jewelry shopping service, you'll be selling directly to your clients at full retail prices, so you won't be paying any booth fees, shop commissions, party hostess incentives, wholesale discounts, etc.

In fact, one of the best things about it is that you have very few sales-related expenses, because there's no “middleman”. Nearly 100% of the proceeds go directly to your business.

And what's more, many of your clients will be fairly big spenders. They'll shop from you over and over again because they love your customized products, personal service, and the way you take their problems out of their hands – and they're willing to pay quite well for it.

The book also has a chapter describing a clever strategy that will increase your profits even more; I give an example of this strategy from my own business, and explain why it's so profitable.

Everything You Need to Know
to Start Your Own Jewelry Shopping Service

In this ebook I share my entire successful business model with you. It's easy to do, and it really works. I've tested and refined my jewelry shopping service strategies, and I describe them in detail in this step-by-step guide.

I also share dozens of real-life examples of successful products, services, marketing methods, and stories from my own jewelry shopping service, to help you get started.

You don't have to re-invent the wheel and go through the same learning curve I did to figure out what really works (and what doesn't!). It's all in the book. :o)

How I Stumbled Across the Lucrative Jewelry Gift Service Niche

copyright by Rena Klingenberg

I first discovered the “jewelry gift service / shopping service” concept several years ago when a friend of mine, who was married to a local doctor, ordered several bracelet and earring sets for her husband to give to all the ladies on his staff for Christmas.

I was extremely surprised that my friend kept thanking me afterward for making this gift-giving responsibility so easy for them.

Here I'd been thinking that I was the one who had benefited from this transaction, because it was such a big order!

That's when I realized that many people need to give nice gifts, but don't have the time (or don't know where to begin) to shop for them.  In fact, most businesses and individuals have to give various types of gifts throughout the year, but they often view it as a major chore.

It isn't that they mind giving gifts.  But they either dislike shopping, don't have time to shop, have no idea where to shop, or can't think of a useful and appropriate gift to give.

These businesses and individuals are usually thrilled and relieved to discover that you can solve their gift-giving problems very easily with your jewelry gift service.

Often they'll buy well over a hundred (often several hundred!) dollars of jewelry from you in half an hour, and then thank you over and over for making it so painless for them to give nice gifts!

When you work closely with clients on an individual basis like this, you get to know their preferences so well that you intuitively offer them the right gift selections and guide them to the right jewelry choices.

You also know the components, options, sizes, colors, and prices to bring to their attention.  Part of your service involves narrowing down the infinite number of options to a small, select group of jewelry for your client to choose from – based on what you've learned about his or her preferences.

That's what makes you a consultant as much as a jewelry designer.

Your services are valuable to your clients because you become a trusted expert who helps them explore various choices and gift-giving problems.

With a jewelry gift and shopping service, you're not just selling jewelry.

You're providing a valuable service that includes (in this order):

-listening
-understanding
-consulting
-researching
-advising
-problem solving
-customizing...

and then furnishing your client with just the right jewelry gifts to give.

This level of service results in extremely loyal customers.  Why would they do their gift shopping anywhere else?

Tailor Your Jewelry Gift and Shopping Service
to Your Local Market

copyright by Rena Klingenberg

To some extent, your jewelry gift and shopping service is shaped by the area where you live and the needs of your local market.  Naturally, the more closely you meet the needs of your local market, the more successful your business will be.

Usually, the smaller (less metropolitan) your town is, the more your customers' needs are likely to lean toward a gift service.  That means many of your customers may tend to be:

- businesses needing gifts for employees, clients, or colleagues
- people who appreciate your jewelry and love to give it as gifts
- gentlemen shopping for their significant others and family members
- elderly or disabled people who can't get out to shop easily
- people who need last-minute gifts and don't have time to go to a store.

In rural areas with no local shops, your jewelry gift service can really blossom.  After all, why would your neighbors drive half an hour into town to go shopping, when your jewelry is right there, all ready to give?

Tip:  Particularly in rural areas, you may find that becoming a home-based “one-stop local gift shop” by providing some additional, non-jewelry gift items makes your gift service even more profitable.

Larger (more metropolitan) markets – especially in areas where there are a lot of executives, or where people tend to dress up more – will have not only gift-shopping needs, but also custom-accessorizing needs, etc.

That means your business may involve more:

- customized trunk shows hosted by clothing boutiques, fashion consultants, resorts, and spas
- your own open-studio events held at your studio or in a rented hall
- private jewelry showings for upscale clients shopping for themselves.

Regardless of where you live, stay open-minded, and think creatively about any situations or connections that may offer you an ideal opportunity to provide a personalized jewelry shopping service to your local market.

Your local market may also give you the opportunity to specialize in a specific niche or two.

For example, if you're located in or near a town that's a retirement community, you may do an extremely brisk business in jewelry bearing the names, birthstones, or photos of grandchildren – plus jewelry gifts for grandchildren.  You may also have a sizable demand for jewelry that's easy for arthritic hands to put on and take off – long necklaces with no clasps, stretchy bracelets, etc.

Or if you're in a college town, one of your niches may be specializing in filling the demand for college-color and college-mascot jewelry, including jewelry for mascot dolls and stuffed animals.

Specializing in niches like these sets you up for word-of-mouth advertising, as more people find out about your unique, on-target offerings and tell others about them.

Soon you find that you have a booming business on your hands – all comprised of retail shoppers buying directly from you – without art shows, shops, galleries, sales reps, eBay, or any other third party taking a chunk of your income.

One of the most important ways to be successful in your local market:

Think creatively about adjusting your products and services to come up with a good fit between the prices your market will bear, and what people in your area need or want that you can provide with your jewelry gift and shopping service.

Working with Your Jewelry Shopping Service Clients

copyright by Rena Klingenberg

One of the most valuable skills for you to develop and use constantly in your successful jewelry shopping service is the art of listening.

Of course your primary objective is to sell your jewelry (and any related products or services you choose).  You can't stay in business very long without making regular sales.

But you also want to close the sale in a way that satisfies your client too.  So it's your job to understand the client's needs and preferences well enough to suggest just the right items for him or her to purchase.

The better your suggestions match with your customers' wants, needs, and tastes, the more your jewelry shopping service will grow and prosper.

Before you can recommend any purchases, you must make sure you and your client are both on the same page.  Ask questions and listen carefully to their answers as you help your customers define their wants or needs.

Continue to summarize and build on what you're hearing the client say, until they say something like “Yes!  That's it exactly!”

One thing I've found is that my customers often don't use the same words I do when referring to various jewelry features or styles.  Sometimes we have what I call a "jewelry vocabulary gap".

For example, one of my clients called and asked me to bring a selection of my “twisted chain necklaces” for her to look at.  Since I've never made anything remotely like a twisted chain necklace, I didn't have a clue what she wanted me to bring.

I had to question her diplomatically till I realized that what she was asking for was my wire-wrapped pendants!

Listening carefully and summarizing verbally can help you provide the exact jewelry your client is hoping for - which will help your jewelry gift and shopping service grow and prosper.
